I got to witness first hand Dr. Gougoutas’s exceptionally caring, unrushed, very professional yet real compassionate heart.
Dr. Gougoutas grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. Raised by a father who is a retired organic chemist, he had early exposure to the sciences, though his ultimate decision to pursue a career in medicine was inspired by his older sister, a radiologist. Knowing that college would be his last chance to formally nurture a life-long love of music, he graduated with a Bachelor’s in music theory and composition. While pursuing his medical degree, a serendipitous introduction to his future mentor, a craniofacial surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, marked the beginning of his journey to become a plastic Surgeon.
After completing his residency, Dr. Gougoutas moved across the country to pursue reconstructive microsurgery fellowship at the University of Washington, where he remained on faculty for 7 years. During his tenure at the university, Dr. Gougoutas developed a diverse and complex practice focusing largely on implant-based and autologous breast reconstruction. As his passion for seeing breast cancer patients through their reconstructive journey grew, so too did his appreciation of the cosmetic challenges their surgeries presented. Mere appreciation was quick to blossom into a true love of cosmetic surgery, leading him to pursue a formal aesthetic surgery fellowship in Eugene, Oregon. Outside of the office Dr. Gougoutas enjoys playing the piano, hiking, biking, and spending time with his wife, son and Goldendoodle, James.
I believe that each patient has a unique story to tell that is shaped by both past experiences and future expectations and desires. Crucial to developing a successful surgeon-patient relationship is understanding this story, which invariably requires more listening than talking. My role as a surgeon is dynamic. It begins as educator-helping patients understand their individualized surgical (or non-surgical) options and associated risks/benefits, as well as their anticipated recovery timeline. It then transitions to one of technician, safely and responsibly executing the plan we have jointly developed. My final role is that of guardian, overseeing the safe recovery of my patients and promptly addressing any post-surgical concerns, should they arise.
Described by his patients as a humble, genuine and perfectionistic, Dr. Gougoutas joined the Polyclinic in 2023, where he offers the full spectrum of breast, body and facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgical procedures, as well as non-surgical injectable /rejuvenation treatments.
